Underway

BERNARDINO-
Recognizing
that
Identity
Theft
is
increasing
at
a
rapid
rate
in
San
Bernardino
County,
District
Attorney
Michael
A.
Ramos
has
implemented
an
Identity
Theft
Unit
to
address
the
problem.
The
Board
of
Supervisors
approved
an
expenditure
of
$611,000
for
the
implementation
of
the
Unit.
Three
experienced
prosecutors
have
been
assigned
to
the
three
major
regions
to
handle
Identity
Theft
cases.
Lance
Cantos
has
been
assigned
to
the
Unit
in
San
Bernardino's
Central
Office,
Don
Pezza
has
the
assignment
in
the
West
End's
Rancho
Cucamonga
Office
and
Anil
Kaushal
is
the
attorney
who
will
be
handling
the
desert
cases
out
of
the
Victorville
Office.
Supervising
Deputy
District
Attorney
Gary
Fagan
will
oversee
the
new
Unit.
The
unit
will
be
working
closely
with
local
law
enforcement
in
developing
their
cases
and
in
the
future
hopes
to
educate
members
of
the
community
in
ways
to
reduce
the
risk
of
being
victimized.
Ramos
commented,
"Identity
Theft
is
a
huge
problem
and
growing
every
day.
Nearly
everyone
knows
someone
who
has
been
a
victim
of
this
crime.
Our
Identity
Theft
Unit
has
received
special
training
in
this
area
and
we
intend
to
deal
with
this
problem
as
vigorously
as
we
do
any
other
crime."
