I emailed the California
Department of Fish and Game (DFG) about the possible destruction of
Rocky, the grizzly bear that recently caused the death of his trainer
near Big Bear Lake.
The following was the response I got.
Thank you for taking the time
to share your concerns about Rocky the grizzly bear. The Department of
Fish and Game (DFG) does not have authority to decide the fate of the
bear because it is contained by its owner and it is not a threat to
public health or safety. The company that owns Rocky possessed a valid
permit and the area in which the incident occurred was not found to be
in violation of safety requirements.
There may be County or city regulations regarding the treatment of
dangerous animals in a situation such as this, and you may contact those
local agencies to learn more.
Again, we thank you for sharing your comments. Public input regarding
DFG's stewardship is vital to our success in our mission to manage
California's diverse wildlife resources.
