Snow Shoe the Bear

The first annual snow shoe race in the Big Bear Valley will take place Saturday, February 9th at 10:00 a.m.  Known as Snow Shoe the Bear, racers may compete in a 10k (6.2 miles) or a 5k (3.1 miles) course distance.  Other festivities scheduled for the weekend include a live performance by local musicians Elevated Roots at Nottingham’s Tavern on Friday evening, race-day children’s programs organized by The Discovery Center, live entertainment and an awards ceremony to take place at the conclusion of the event.

More than 150 racers are expected to participate in this inaugural event.  It is sponsored by Kahtoola Snow Travel Systems, Sole Footbeds, Bridgedale socks of Ireland and Inov8 running shoes.  Locally, the race is organized by mountain shop Equada Outfitters and Big Bear-based adventure racers Paul Romero and Karen Lundgren, of Team Sole.  “We wanted to do something in Big Bear that would showcase our great winter trail network and offer visitors an alternative winter sport,” says Peter Fulkerson, owner of Equada Outfitters.  “We expect this to be the first of a series of snowshoe races in Big Bear,” adds Paul Romero, adventure racer.

Registered racers will be able to demo snow shoes through Equada Outfitters.  Prizes will be awarded to top finishers of the event in the men’s and women’s category and each registrant will receive a goody-bag.  Additionally, racers and non-racers will be eligible to enter a raffle supported by local businesses including El Jacalito, Peppercorn Grill, La Montana, Sonora Cantina and North Pole Fudge, among others.

Registration for the race is available through Equada Outfitters by calling (909) 866-6186 or visiting www.equadaoutfitters.com.  Cost for registration is $25.00 per participant for the 5k and $45.00 per participant for the 10K.  Race day registration is available for an added $10.00 fee, or $35.00 for the 5k and $55.00 for the 10K.  A $10.00 fee will be charged for snow shoe rental.  For more information contact Peter Fulkerson at info@equadaoutfitters.com.
